  Let the journey begin with Rail Europe

Tren de La Fresa
Strawberry Train

Rail Travel Spain...El Tren de La Fresa (Strawberry Train) is nowadays a tourist attraction that will take you back in time on a steam locomotive to the days when it was founded in 1851 by Queen Isabel II.  This route was the second oldest to be built in Spain and it connects Madrid to the city of Aranjuez. The  name of the train is due to the fact that as well as passenger the line transports tasty strawberries to the markets of Madrid. 

At the present time the train only runs Saturdays and Sundays from the 15th of May till the 17th of October. 

Departure Times

  • The train departs from the Museo del Ferrocarril (Train Museum) at 10:00 in the morning and arrives in Aranjuez at 10:50am.
  • The return journey departs Aranjuez at 6:25pm arriving again at the Museo del Ferrocarril at 7:15pm.


  • 23 Euros for Adults
  • 15 Euros for Children

Ticket Includes

  • Round trip ticket on historic steam train
  • Guided visit of the city of Aranjuez including the Royal Palace, and Faúlas Museum
  • Sampling of strawberries from the area served by stewardesses in Victorian gowns and bustles


Tren de Cervantes

Rail Travel Spain....El Tren de Cervantes runs Saturdays and Sundays until June 24th and from September 22nd to December 9th.  The journey on this tourist train will take you back to Golden Age in Spain to the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quijote de la Mancha, one of the world’s most read books. 

While on the train you will be entertained by actors depicting Don Quixote, Sancho Panza and other well known characters from the works of Cervantes.

Departure Times

  • The train departs from Atocha Station at 11:00 in the morning and arrives in Alcalá de Henares at 10:30am.
  • The return journey departs Alcalá de Henares at 7:00pm arriving again at the Atocha Train station at 7:30pm.


  • 20 Euros for Adults
  • 15 Euros for Children

Ticket Includes

  • Round trip ticket on historic train
  • Entertainment is provided on the train by a group of city actors who perform some short comedy plays written by Cervantes.
  • Guided visit of the city of Alcála de Henares including the University of Alcála de Henares, Museo Casa (Cervante's Home), Hospital de Antenaza and Monasterio San Bernardo.
  • Sampling of traditional pastries served by stewardesses dressed up in 17th century garments.

The trip allows for plenty of spare time to be spent in Alcalá de Henares, giving you the opportunity to explore its twisted cobbled streets and elegant colonnades, particularly on Calle Mayor.


El Tren Medieval de Sigüenza
Medieval Train to Sigüenza

Rail Travel Spain can be a lot of fun! For all of you jousting fans out there the fall season of the Medieval Train to Sigüenza started on September 11, 2010. 

Departing from the Chamartín Station in Madrid this theme travel adventure will totally amuse you!   You may find yourself sitting next to a princess while enjoying the special medieval lunch served on board including:  tasty sweets made especially for the Medieval Train Passengers.

The adventure gets more exciting once you arrive at the medieval city of Sigüenza where you will stop at the Castle, Cathedral, Plaza Mayor and many, many more interesting sites.  Keep in mind that most restaurants offer a 10% discount to all Medieval Train Passengers.

This year will be the fifth year of the Medieval Train Service…here is some practical information on this unique train…

Departure Times

  • The train departs from Chamartín Train Station in Madrid at 10:00 in the morning and arrives in Sigüenza at 11:25am.
  • The return journey departs Sigüenza at 6:30pm arriving again at Charmartín Train Station in Madrid at 7:55pm.

Departure Dates- make sure to always double check dates

  • In September - 11, 18 and 25
  • In October - 2,16 and 23
  • In November - 6, 13, 20 and 27


  • 26 Euros for Adults
  • 16 Euros for Children under 14

Ticket Includes

  • Round trip ticket on historic train
  • Entertainment is provided on the train
  • Guided visit of the city of Sigüenza stopping at the Castle, the Cathedral, the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Plazuela de la Cárcel and the Casa del Doncel and many more.  The ticket includes entrance fees to sites
  • Sampling of traditional pastries served by stewardesses dressed in medieval customs made specially for the journey

While exploring the city of Sigüenza don't forget to try the Yemas del Doncel (little sweets made from egg yolks) that are sure to delight you!  Also keep in mind that many establishments will give you up to a 10% discount when you show them your Medieval Train ticket...

Tren de la Cremallera
Zipper Train

Rail Travel Spain...Tren de la Cremallera, a 12 kilometer scenic railway, going up for more than 1000 meters high, the zipper train connect Ribas de Freser to Queralbs and Vall de Núria.  Along with the Monserrat it is the only existing Tren de Cremallera (Zipper Train) in the Iberian Peninsula.

The train was introduced March 22nd, 1931 and has been electrically operated from the start by an overhead supply of 1500 V DC.  The first 3.4 miles of the line are operated by conventional rail adhesion, the remainder of the line is operated as a rack railway (railway with toothed rack rail which resembles a zipper).  

The beauty and spectacular scenery is perhaps the most remarkable feature of this journey in addition to the train itself.

Once in Vall De Núria, you can visit the Sanctuary of  the Virgin of Núria, know for giving the gift of fertility to those couples that could not have children. 

In addition to the regular schedule the rail company offers a journey to the past in their period lounge car.  A car designed with luxury in mind and decorated with the finest materials, this car is only used on special occasions. On these occasions, you can experience luxury at its best by sampling cava and pastries as a guide narrates the history and features of the train while on your way to Vall de Núria.  Upon arrival you will have planned activities including lunch at Ráco de la Vall restaurant where you will enjoy first class cuisine in an elegant and charming surrounding.

Tren de Sóller

Rail Travel Spain...Tren de Sóller train service started in 1912 thanks to the hard work of Jerno Estades and the town of Sóller in the Costa Blanca.  It is a tourist train that will take you from the Port of Sóller to Palma de Mallorca on a vintage train.  The journey takes an hour taking you through tunnels and mountains and some of the best views in the area.  It is an enchanting way to take in the gorgeous scenery, particularly the natural barrier of the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range. 

Please note:  the tourist train will be close for renovation from 12/09/2010 to 0131/2011 (inclusive).  Rail Travel Spain Tren de Sóller departures

Limón Express (Lemon Express)

Rail Travel Spain...Limón Express is a charming train restored in the 1930's will take you from Benidorm to Gata de Gorgos.  The journey travels approximately 30 miles from Benidorm through Alte, Calpe, Benissa and Teulada ending in Gata de Gorgos.  This line is one of the most scenic train rides taking you through the hilly countryside and alongside golden beaches all the while accompanying guides will make sure you do not miss a thing!. Upon your arrival in Gata de Gorgo you will be given a  choice to either tour a guitar factory or a popular local basket weaving factory.  On your return journey you will be served a glass of wine to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

The train runs all year on Tuesday through Saturday departing at 09:35am, you can by tickets at your hotel, through a travel agent or at the Benidorm Railway Station.

Tren del Ciment (Cement Train)

Train Travel Spain...Tren del Ciment this tourist train managed by FGC runs through the old layout of an industrial rail.  The eight mile line ran from 1914 to 1963 and used to link the old cement factory to Guardiola N'Hug in the province of Cataluña.  The train trip allows travelers to discover not only amazing sites but some works of the well known architect Gaudí and important industrial archeological sites.
