Beaches in Spain

Top Beaches in Spain

With the arrival of the summer I decided to conduct an informal poll among my family and friends to find out what are the beaches they liked the most.  After much discussion and deliberation we were able to agree which are our top Beaches.

Playa-de-los-Muertos Playa de los Muertos in Carboneras Almería considered one of the best beaches in Spain, this beach is actually very unique as it has a feature that makes different from any other beach in Cabo de Gata and for that matter Spain.  Playa de los Muertos is perfectly straight as if it had been deliberately drawn with a ruler but even more unique is its name.   Have you wondered why it is called the beach of the dead?  Apparently throughout history many bodies of pirates, sailors and merchants were washed to the shore due to the dangerous waters, the large amount of currents that exist in these waters have been the cause numerous of accidents and legends.
Playa-Maspalomas Maspalomas, Gran Canaria this beach offers something for everyone from all kinds of water sports to bird watching, sunbathing or just drinking at one of the bars along the beach. Considered one of the best beaches of the Canary Islands with its white sand, clear blue waters and dunes formed by the wind Maspalomas is a natural paradise.
Playa-de-los-alemanes Playa de los Alemanes in Zahara de los Atunes Cádiz located in the Costa de la Luz it has golden fine sand and turquoise waters the beach is quite and clean.
Cala-Conta Cala Conta in Ibiza located west of San Antonio after Cala Bassa it is a beautiful beach with breathtaking views and gorgeous turquoise waters.  During high season this beach is very popular so it is best to get there early or come later on in the afternoon.  The two main beaches are separated by a restaurant with fabulous views

Playa de Rodas Islas Cíes this is the most well known and one of the more spectacular beaches in Spain belonging  to the natural park of Islas Cíes in the province of Pontevedra,  Galicia.  It is considered one of the best beaches in the world.  The Playa de Rodas is composed of fine white sand and amazing clear waters.  To access the islands is necessary to go by boat from either the port of Vigo or Cangas

Playa de Catedrales in Ribadeo is a spectacular beach when the tide is low visitors have the opportunity to enjoy wonderful walks through the arches the sea has slowly created on the cliff, as well as exploring the numerous caves.  The beach can still be enjoyed when the tide is high taking a stroll along the edge of the cliff or drinking a caña while looking at the fantastic views from el Restaurant de Las Catedrales.  The place is a lesson on how nature once more has surpassed man kind creating gothic arches even before man discovered them.
Playa-de-Oliva-Valencia Playa de Oliva in Valencia is spectacular with its clean fine sandy beache that goes on for over 10 miles bordered by a natural dune, the single divide between the orange groves and the sea.   Enjoy the sea and water sports, adventure and adrenaline or just chill in this beautiful beach
Playa del Papagayo Lanzarote is a beautiful cove of fine white sand and turquoise waters protected from the wind by a small hill that stands behind it.  Because of its beauty Playa del Papagayo has become one of the main attractions of Lanzarote making it a very visited beach, particularly, in the summer time when many tourist come to the shores of the protected natural park of Los Ajaches to spend the day.
Ses Illetes-Formentera Ses Illetes Formentera is one of the emblematic beaches of the Balearic Islands consisting of a hybrid of blues and malachite waters, subtle grains of sand and an environment with little degradation.  Wooden walkways prevent visitors from walking over the dunes and ensure their conservation.
Playa del Palmar Torrenueva located in Verjer de la Frontera is one of the biggest beaches in the area, it caters to a wide variety of visitors anywhere from families to those seeking adventure, as it is very well known in Andalucía for surfing, bodysurfing and lately kite surfing.  It is also a good spot for fishing.

Note. the list of these beaches in Spain is not in any particular order.
