Train Travel in Spain...El Transcantábrico, operated by Ferrocarriles Españoles de Via Estrecha (FEVE), which means narrow gauge Spanish Railways, started its service in 1983 along the same railway lines of the old coal trains of the historic La Robla Railway which took coal from Leon to Vizcaya.
The cars are designed in a way that reminisces of the leather-bound glory days of rail travel but yet still offer all of the modern conveniences and amenities that any passenger would demand. The train has six sleeper cars each with four double compartments with en-suite facilities and four lounge cars.
Every sleeper compartment has a double bed with some having the option of an independent upper bunk. Each cabin is equipped with a luggage rack, mini-bar, safe deposit box, wardrobe, writing desk and a telephone with an outside line. The private bathroom is equipped with a hydro sauna, turbo massage and steam bath. The air-conditioning and heating, music and lights are all controlled individually. In addition all cabins have large window in both the suite and the bathroom so that you enjoy the passing scenery anywhere you are.
The train has four lounge cars, these are common areas where you can sit, relax and take in the beautiful scenery as well as read, get to know your fellow passengers or play one of the many board games provided. Passengers are offered daily newspapers, magazines and wide collection of books from the library as well as television and videos...even though the best entertainment is just outside your window...
One of these cars better known as the “pub carriage” has a bar and a dance floor, here entertainment is provided every night and goes on till the early hours of the morning if you are up for it!
