Ingredients needed:

  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • 3 eggs NOTE:  depending on your personal preference you can add more eggs if you like your flan to be more dense.
  • 1 (14 ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) evaporated milk
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

Cooking Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350° degrees

Heat up sauce pan over medium heat for about 30 seconds add sugar and stir until sugar is completely melted and caramelized.  Make sure the sugar does not burn or you will have to start all over again!

Pour the caramelized sugar into each individual flan mold or ramekin dish (single serving dish in which the food is cooked or baked and served) and swirl it around as to cover the bottom and sides of dish.  Tip:  Keep your baking dishes warm in the oven while preparing the flan so once you pour the caramel (melted sugar) into them the caramel will not harden as quickly.

In a large bowl beat the eggs then add the condensed milk, evaporated mil, vanilla extract and mix until smooth

Pour mixture into baking dishes

Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes al Baño Maria (water bath).  To make sure the flan does not over cook check after 45 minutes, then every 3 to 5 minutes until done by inserting a knife in the middle checking until it comes out clean

Let the mixture cool completely before serving!  Some people prefer to let the flan sit covered overnight and them warm it up al Baño Maria (water bath) before serving.

Above recipe makes 8 individual servings and takes about 60 minutes to prepare.
