Despite its status as a leading European capital, land-locked Madrid has often been overshadowed as a tourist destination by the more glamorously chic Barcelona. Where are we?San Sebastian, on the Atlantic Coast in the north of Spain. Or, as the locals prefer to call it, the Basque Country. And they prefer to call the city Donostia, too. Guernica, spelled Gernika in its native Basque, is a modest market town – it has a population of 16,000 – and everyone seems to know each other. Barcelona, the capital of the autonomous Spanish region of Cataluña, is famous for many things: sunny beaches, a mild Mediterranean climate, exotic cuisine, afternoon siestas and bold art and architecture.
